If you’ve ever wondered why some pickleballs fly like rocks and others feel like sponges, it’s all because of it has different specs. Whether you're buying for a local club or just getting gear for yourself, you must to know and learn what the USAPA looks for. TPU Sports like to share you with----the quick breakdown of the technical side in 4 details.

1. The Size and Weight (The "Feel")
A standard pickleball isn't just a random plastic ball. The diameter has to be between 2.87 to 2.97 inches. If it’s outside that, it’s not legal. Same goes for the weight—it needs to be 0.78 to 0.93 ounces. Even a tiny bit of extra weight makes a huge difference in how the ball handles the wind.
2. The Bounce Rule
This is the one most people forget. If you drop the ball from 75 inches onto concrete, it has to bounce back up between 30 and 34 inches. If it bounces higher or lower, your "touch" game (the dinks) will be totally off.
3. Indoor vs Outdoor: just counting the Holes
This is the easiest way to tell balls apart:
- Outdoor Balls: Usually have 40 small holes. They are harder plastic so they don't drift in the wind.
- Indoor Balls: Usually have 26 larger holes. These are softer and better for gym floors.
4. Material and Hardness
The last but not the least is the material & hardness. Most pros look for a Durometer (hardness) rating between 40 and 50. If it’s too soft, it’s "mushy." If it’s too hard, it cracks in cold weather.
